Policies and Procedures: List

The Brookline Community Crisis Intervention Team (BCCIT) is a true community partnership, whose primary objective is to promote communication and enhance the response of public and private agencies when summoned ot intervene with individuals who are mentally ill, developmentally disabled or experiencing trauma in their lives. The purpose of the special order is to establish policy, procedure, and operational guidelines for the Members of Brookline Police Department who have voluntarily agreed to participate in the BCCIT initiative.

Person in custody requires immediate mental health treatment. Prisoners may be brought to an ED for purposes of medical stabilization and clearance, but the police are still responsible for managing the Section 18 process for evaluation and transport to a DMH-run facility, EVEN if the prisoner is first brought to an ED. The flow chart is attached.

In the course of their duties, Brookline Police Officers often come into contact with individuals who are in crisis and need to be transported by ambulance to an area emergency room for psychological evaluations. Due to various factors, these individuals often present differently to medical staff than they do on the scene of the transport. In an effort to better serve these individuals, and provide the treating emergency room staff with a more comprehensive view of the factors that led to the individual being in crisis, Brookline Police Officers will complete a "Brookline Police Communication Form". In the case of involuntary transports, these forms will be used to supplement the information provided in a Section 12.

Attached is the public safety form.

The Brookline Police Department places the highest value on the life and safety of our officers and on the safety of the public.  A reverence and respect for the dignity of all persons and the sanctity of human life shall be reflected in all training, leadership, and procedures of the Brookline Police Department.
